Swiss Guard - Personal Protection for the Pope
The Swiss Guard provides personal protection for the Pope. Serving the papacy since 1506, members wear their blue-and-orange uniforms while on public duty. Currently, there are just over 100 men who serve in this capacity. As an independent government, Vatican City has its own currency and stamps. This €2 commemorative coin was issued to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Swiss Guard.
