Slave Trade - Tethering Human Beings

The Illustrated London News published an article, and this picture, in the September 17, 1845 issue.  From the article, we learn that these shackles were found by divers from a U.S. steamer (the Missouri) which caught on fire, then sank, at Gibraltar.

According to the story, divers for the wreck were finding other things by the "cartloads ... slave shackles, of every strength and size, for men and women, old and young ... They are such as are used in the slave trade."
