Thurgood Marshall - Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme CourtThurgood Marshall (1908-1993) was the first African-American to serve as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The Library of Congress provides additional background information on him: Earlier in his career, Marshall worked as a lawyer for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and helped win the 1954 landmark desegregation case, Brown v.
