Apollo 13 - Gene Kranz at Mission ControlGene Kranz was a key player, among other NASA representatives, who helped Apollo 13's flight crew safely return to Earth after a life-threatening situation developed in space. In this photo, we see Kranz watching the crew shortly before the problem occurred. NASA provides the following description: Gene Kranz, with his back to us, at right center watches a TV transmission from the Apollo 13 crew moments before the accident that crippled the mission. Fred Haise can be seen on the large screen at the upper right. 13 April 1970. Click on the image for a better view.
