William Quantrill

William Quantrill, once a school teacher, formed a group of Confederate raiders whose guerilla tactics frightened civilians and soldiers. 

In its eight-part documentary series, The West, PBS refers to Quantrill (1837-1865) as "leader of perhaps the most savage fighting unit in the Civil War."
