Wreck Inquiry - Lusitania Findings

Lord Mersey’s findings, following considerable evidence given at the wreck inquiry, attributed the loss of the Lusitania to the U-boat’s actions against her.  Mersey believed that more than one torpedo had been fired, but he did not have access to Captain Schwieger’s testimony or his log notes.

Winston Churchill later observed that the sinking, with young children and babies drowning in the sea, likely caused America to join the war.

Captain Schweiger died in combat not long after the Lusitania sank.
