San Francisco Earthquake of 1906
THE PEOPLE REBUILD
Disasters tend to bring out the best (and worst) in people as communities fight to regain what was lost. During the 1906 catastrophe, firefighters and police, together with the U.S. Army and Navy, worked hard to save what they could of the city. Risking their own lives to help others, some have written accounts of how many individuals worked together to save, and restore, San Francisco. The following quotes are from U.S. Army Brigadier General Frederick Funston’s story "How the Army Worked to Save San Francisco," published in Cosmopolitian Magazine (July 1906): Making sure the people were safe was key, but so was fighting the growing fire. General Funston continues: Sometimes one must fight fire with fire. In addition, ruined buildings had to be cleared away so recovery and rebuilding could take place. Dynamite came in handy. Furston tells how: After the rubble was cleared, the new San Francisco sprang to life more quickly than anyone could have imagined. Some alive at the time thought the new city would be far better than the old. Today - more than one hundred years later - many people agree.
