It is 1957, and streaking across the sky a satellite is seen - and heard - for the first time. Its name is Sputnik.
Made, and launched, by the Soviet Union, the satellite is a major achievement. The first round of the space race is won by America’s cold-war enemy, and the United States government is humiliated. It wasn’t the first time the Kremlin surprised Washington, D.C.
