Answer KEY for AwesomeStories Quiz, Slumdog Millionaire Jamal Malik is a young man who lives in an area of Mumbai known as Dharavi. About a million people live in Dharavi, a city-within-a-city which has been described as a “shanty town.” Britain gained control over part of India when King Charles II married a princess of Portugal whose family controlled the area known today as Mumbai. During the time of British control, the area of Mumbai was transformed from a cluster of islands to a city. Known as the financial capital of India, Mumbai also has areas of extreme poverty where poor people live. The film, Slumdog Millionaire, is based on a book called Q&A, written by Vikas Swarup. Mumbai is named for the Hindu goddess Mumba Devi, who is patron goddess of the Kolis people. Memory is Jamal Malik’s best weapon on the game show. Student answers will vary.
