The Soloist

PREFACE

Don’t walk in front of me,
I may not follow.
Don’t walk behind me,
I may not lead.
Just walk beside me
and be my friend.

Albert Camus

Steve Lopez, columnist for the LA Times, was out of ideas.  With a deadline looming, he decided to take a walk.  Maybe something would come to him.  Desperation is sometimes a good motivator.

As he approached Pershing Square, he was drawn to the strains of music rising above the sounds of a busy street.  What was the music?  Who was playing?

What Lopez found that day was more than a subject for a column.
