K-19: The Widowmaker The Story Behind the Movie

Near the beginning of the Cold War arms race, a Soviet nuclear-powered, ballistic-missile submarine was on her maiden patrol mission. On the morning of July 4, 1961, the K-19 experienced a nuclear accident.

With no emergency back-up system on board, Captain Nikolai Zateyev (called "Alexei Vostrikov" in the movie) and his Executive Officer Vladimir Yenin (called "Mikhail Polenin" in the movie) faced a terrible problem. Crew members had to fix a leak in the reactor's primary cooling system. If the fix didn't work, all on board would die in a thermonuclear explosion. If it worked, the men who cured the problem would surely die of radiation sickness.
