For the first time in weeks, the clouds over Cuba gave way to clear skies. It was October 14, 1962. Major Richard Heyser (third from left) was about to fly his U-2 on a spy mission over the Caribbean island. What he found brought the world as close as it’s ever come to nuclear war.
