During the months following the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan was winning the war in the Pacific. Japanese intelligence broke every Allied military code.
In May of 1942, however, the unwritten Navajo language was used to create a code which became a secret weapon for the U.S. Marine Corps. Navajo code talkers, using their native tongue to transmit top secret military messages, helped to turn the war against Japan.
