Student Stories on the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus - Temple of Artemis by Samantha Castillo-Dixon and Anthony Valdes

The Temple of Artemis was built in 800 B.C, to honor Artemis, who was one of three maiden goddesses of Olympus. It was built in Ephesus, which today would be near Selcuk, Turkey. The first temple was built in approximately 800 BC.

The first temple was destroyed in the 7th century. Reconstruction began in 550 BC. It took about 10 years to rebuild it. Some historians say it was destroyed due to a flood. Others believe it was due to war. The second temple was approximately four times larger in area.

Diana was the goddess of the hunt, the moon, and nature being associated with wild animals and woodland, and having the power to talk to and control animals. She was equated with the Greek goddess Artemis. The temple of Artemis was built to honor this Greek goddess (known to ancient Romans as the goddess Diana).

[3] The Statue of Zeus

The Statue of Zeus was built around 435 B.C in a sanctuary located in Olympia, Greece. It was 43 feet tall. Zeus was the king of all other gods.    [4]

The statue of Zeus was created by a Greek sculptor Phidias in the 5th-century B.C. The sculpture of Zeus was made out of gold panels and ivory panels layered over a wooden framework. The sculptor Phidias had made a statue of the goddess Athena SIMILAR TO THE STATUE OF ZEUS.

The statue of Zeus was lost and destroyed by fire in the 5th century AD, and the only trace they have left is its representations on coins.
