Virginia Tech Massacre - Summary

Spring is in full bloom Monday morning on April 16, 2007. All seems well at Virginia Tech’s campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. Emily Jane Hilscher has just returned to her dorm when, shortly after 7 a.m., an intruder enters. Soon, she is the first victim of America’s second-worst mass shooting by a single gunman.

Seung-Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech, shoots and kills 32 people and wounds 17 others. Professors and students are among the victims including:

  • Austin Michelle Cloyd, an 18 year-old freshman in International Studies and French.
  • Reema Samaha, an 18 year-old freshman in Urban Planning.
  • Professor G.V. Loganathan, an engineering teacher.
  • Caitlin Hammaren, a 19 year-old sophomore in International Studies and French.
  • Julia Pryde, a 23 year-old first year Masters student in Biological Systems Engineering.
  • Michael Steven Poyle, Jr., a 23 year-old senior in Biological Science.
  • Mary Karen Read, a 19 year-old freshman in Interdisciplinary Studies.
  • Minal Panchal, a 26 year-old first year Masters student in Architecture.
  • Professor Liviu Librescu, an engineering teacher.
  • Jarrett Lane, a 22 year-old senior in Civil Engineering.
  • Ross Abdallah Alameddine, a 20 year-old sophomore in English.
  • Jamie Bishop, a German instructor
  • Ryan Clark, a 22 year-old senior in Psychology/Biology/English.
  • Waleed Shaalan, a 32 year-old first year PhD student in Civil Engineering.
  • Nicole Regina White, a 20 year-old junior in International Studies.
  • Juan Ortiz, a 26 year-old first year Masters student in Civil Engineering.
  • Lauren Ashley McCain, a 20 year-old freshman in International Studies.
  • Matthew Gwaltney, a 24 year-old second year Masters student in Environmental Engineering.
  • Professor Kevin Granata, an engineering teacher.
  • Brian Bluhm, a 25 year-old second year Masters student in Civil Engineering.
  • Emily Hilscher, a 19 year-old freshman in Animal and Poultry Sciences.
  • Leslie Sherman, a 20 year-old junior in History and International Relations.
  • Daniel Perez Cueva, a 21 year-old junior in International Studies.
  • Matt La Porte, a 20 year-old freshman in Political Science.
  • Jocelyne Couture-Nowak, an adjunct professor in Foreign Language.
  • Jeremy Herbstritt, a 27 year-old first year Masters student in Civil Engineering.
  • Rachael Hill, an 18 year-old freshman in Biological Sciences.
  • Henry Lee, a 20 year-old freshman in Computer Engineering.
  • Partahi Lumbantoruan, a 34 year-old fourth year PhD student in Civil Engineering.
  • Daniel O'Neil, a 22 year-old first year Masters student in Environmental Engineering.
  • Erin Peterson, an 18 year-old freshman in International Studies.
  • Maxine Turner, a 22 year-old freshman in Chemical Engineering.

As a tribute to the victims, this story celebrates the lives of those who are lost. Students from McMullen County High School (in Tilden, Texas) author "Voices From Virginia Tech," poems about 24 of the 32 victims who die in the massacre.
