Airlift Operation of Villagers Visual Arts American History Government Social Studies

As guerillas from North Vietnam (referred to by the U.S. military as “Vietcong”) infiltrated the rural villages of South Vietnam, people just trying to live their lives were pulled into the conflict.  The individuals in this photo were en route to a safer place after their village was in ruins.

Maintained at the U.S. National Archives, this picture has the following description:

Stunned by the viciousness of a Viet Cong attack on their village, Vietnam war refugees ride an Air Force helicopter to a safe area near Saigon., 03/1966.
