Ajax Carries the Body of Achilles from the Battlefield Legends and Legendary People Social Studies Ancient Places and/or Civilizations Fiction Visual Arts

Hoping to receive Achilles' armor, in exchange for his good deed of protecting and retrieving the body of his friend, Ajax returns the remains of Achilles from the battlefield to the Achaean camp.

Ulysses (Odysseus), however, sees to it that Ajax does not get the coveted armor.  When he fails in his quest, Ajax commits suicide.

This ancient drawing depicts Ajax carrying the body of Achilles from the battlefield.
