Al Capone - Head of "The Outfit"

Johnny Torrio was so confident in Al Capone's growing ability to run "The Outfit's" business that he took a cruise, leaving Al in charge.  When he returned, Torrio knew Capone was the right man to succeed him.

Whenever Al got in trouble, he didn't have to worry about "getting off." Jurors - sitting or prospective - would simply not vote against him.  It wasn't worth it - so they said - to go against the man who was effectively running Chicago.

Dion O'Banion, who crossed Torrio and Capone, paid with his life.  Once again, Frankie Yale was involved with the killing.

Capone ran things from the Metropole Hotel (with its secret tunnels) after Johnny Torrio was convicted on a Prohibition-related charge.  When Torrio announced he was finished with The Outfit, Capone became the top man.  No one was surprised at that development.

By 1925, Chicago gangsters were fighting each other with Tommy Guns, a lethal weapon.  Capone even brought Chicago-style violence to New York, in late 1925, when he took his son (who was partially deaf) to visit a New York doctor.  Once again, however, no eyewitness recalled seeing, or hearing, anything.

Following his return to Chicago, Capone thought it best to leave the city after a series of other violent activities.  He spent the summer of 1926, hiding out in Lansing, Michigan.  Once again, after he returned to Chicago, Capone wasn't even indicted.

This clip, from "Al Capone - Scarface," a 1995 documentary, includes historic film footage and interviews with people who knew Al Capone.  It is narrated by John Mahoney.
