Tom Jefferson consulted Algernon Sidney’s book - Discourses Concerning Government - when he wrote the Declaration of Independence.  Among other things, that work disputes the "natural power" of kings.

Later, Jefferson wrote that Discourses "is probably the best elementary book of the principles of government."  (See Jefferson's December 13, 1804 letter to Mason Weems.)
