Are We Desensitized?

In The Hunger Games, a group of young people called "tributes" are chosen to fight each other to the death. These "games" are mandated by the government of a fictional country called "Panem." The government also requires the citizens of Panem to watch the unfolding of the games on national television.

Do you think that television has a tendency to "desensitize" the way in which people view (and understand) violence?  If so, how—and—to what extent can TV viewers do anything about it?
