Asa Candler

Asa Candler

Asa Griggs Candler - a former employee of Dr. John S. Pemberton - obtained Pemberton's rights to his secret formula for Coca Cola. Before long, Candler was one of the richest people in Atlanta.

Among other things, Coke's new owner brilliantly marketed the product with an ingenious use of coupons which entitled people to try the drink free at soda fountains.  The Library of Congress tells us more:

Considered a pioneer in coupon promotions, Candler offered two gallons of Coca-Cola syrup "to any retailer or soda fountain man" who would dispense 128 free servings (a gallon's worth) of the beverage to customers who showed up with one of his cards.
