Asteroid 2012 DA 14 - Animated Trajectory

On the 15th of February, 2013, Asteroid 2012 DA 14 was expected to travel within the Earth-Moon system.  Astronomers predicted the actual travel path, then created an animation of it.

This NASA video clip includes two separate items:

  • 2012 DA 14's actual trajectory:  As the asteroid approached Earth, it was seen - and its path was recorded - by the Murrumbateman Observatory (in Australia).  The images were recorded at approximately 12:18 p.m. EST.
  • 2012 DA 14's expected trajectory:  NASA/JPL predicted its flight path which we see in animated format.
