Benjamin O. Davis - 99th Pursuit Squad

Benjamin O. Davis - 99th Pursuit Squad Tragedies and Triumphs American History African American History Aviation & Space Exploration

Lt. Colonel Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., was a strict disciplinarian and repeatedly told his pilots they needed to perform at the highest-possible level.  He expected no less of himself.

Davis was commander of the 99th Pursuit Squad and eventually was commander of the 332nd Fighter Group.  All the pilots - in the Squad and in the Group - were African Americans.

In this photo, taken in 1942, we see Davis getting into his plane at Tuskegee Institute.
