Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. - Flight Student

At the time he joined the Tuskegee Experiment - to become a military combat pilot - Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., was a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Force.  (At the time, in 1941 and throughout World War II, the Army and Air Force were not separate branches of the military.)

Captain Davis was one of only two African-American line officers in the USAAF while he was at Tuskegee.  His father, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr. - a General - was the other.

This photo depicts Davis when he was a cadet at the United States Military Academy.  While a student there, he endured a great deal of racial discrimination from the other cadets.
