This is part three of the 1958 film, Brothers Karamazov, directed by Richard Brooks. The story, which follows the lives of four brothers and their individual reactions to the murder of their father, is a detailed study in character development.
Dostoevsky, as he directly tells us at the beginning of the book, considered Alexei the novel's hero. That character was named after the writer's young son, whom the family called Alyosha. The child died following a two-hour seizure, and his parents were inconsolable.
Later, Mrs. Dostoevsky described her husband's attitude toward the character he had created:
...together with the name, all of a father's tenderness, all the unrealized hopes for his son's brilliant future, were transmitted to the novel's young hero. (Anna Grigorievna, quoted by Victor Terras, in A Karamazov Companion: Commentary on the Genesis, Language and Style of Dostoevsky's Novel, at page 27.)
