Browning Automatic Rifle

Browning Automatic Rifle Biographies Social Studies World War II

John M. Browning invented the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle).  In this image, circa 1918, we see him discussing his new weapon with Mr. Burton (a rifle expert).

Americans used the weapon throughout World War II.  It was also used by others, such as Polish partisans and Polish resistors (in the Warsaw Uprising).

The BAR was still used, by Americans, in the Korean War and in the Vietnam War (especially in the early years).  Sometimes the much-valued weapon ended-up in the hands of North Vietnamese guerillas (also called "Vietcong").
