Camp Elliot - Code Talkers American History Native-Americans and First Peoples  Social Studies Tragedies and Triumphs World War II

Men from the Navajo Nation, who became U.S. Marines, stand in formation in this image which depicts them at Camp Elliott.  These men were Code Talkers who trained to do their job under the supervision of Staff Sgt. Philip Johnston.

Johnston, who had lived among the Navajo when he was young, had originally suggested that Navajo speakers could develop a code which would likely not be broken.
