Thaddeus Kosciuszko: Hero of the American Revolution - Chapter 3: First assignment

Fort Billingsport, PA 0 Awesome Teacher Story Share American History American Revolution Biographies Famous People

Benjamin Franklin assigned Thaddeus his first task. Fort Billingsport was at the mouth of the Delaware River and was the major defense for the city of Philadelphia.

Franklin knew it was somewhat vulnerable and if the British got past this fortification, they could easily advance up the river and attack Philadelphia. He assigned Thaddeus to use his military and engineering skills to reinforce the ramparts at Fort Billingsport which, at first, he volunteered to do as a favor to Franklin.

Soon, his work was officially sanctioned and the Continental Congress commissioned him as a colonel of engineers in the Continental Army.

His work strengthened Philadelphia’s safety and insured the British would not be able to bring their notable naval forces near the city.
