Charles II of Spain - With A Dropped Lip

Charles II of Spain - With A Dropped Lip Famous People Social Studies World History Visual Arts

Some members of the Hapsburg (Habsburg) family had a condition known as "dropped lip" (also referred to as the "Hapsburg Jaw").  One member of the family - King Charles II of Spain - had a particularly noticeable case, as depicted in this painting.

Many artists either changed the appearance of their subjects, so as to avoid including that feature in their work, or avoided poses where the condition was more obvious.

This painting is by Claudio Coello (1642-1693).  It is believed to have been created sometime between 1670-1680 and depicts Charles in his twenties.
