Child Labor-Dangerous Equipment

Even children from more well-to-do families worked as child laborers during the early 20th century. 

In this photo, by Lewis Hine, we see a ten-year-old  boy working with a  beet-topping knife featuring a dangerous hook at the top.

This shows a typical beet-topping knife, with the dangerous hook on the end that is used to pick up the beet.  This is the ten-year-old Walker boy ... belonging to a well-to-do family, but kept out of school to work.  Location:  Sterling [vicinity], Colorado / Photo by Hine, Oct. 1915.
