Child Miners-Stooping in a Mine Seam

Even though they were smaller than adult workers, child miners still had to stoop in mines because of narrow seams and low ceilings.

Lewis Hine took this photo of a child miner stooping in a mine seam.  Note that his helmet flame is nearly touching the ceiling.

Trapper Boy, Turkey Knob Mine, Macdonald, W. Va.  Boy had to stoop on account of low roof, photo taken more than a mile inside the mine.  Witness E. N. Clopper.  Location:  MacDonald, West Virginia.
