Crusaders - Enter Jerusalem

Crusaders penetrated the walls and entered Jerusalem

On the 15th of July, 1099, members of the First Crusade overcame the defenders of Jerusalem and entered the city.

Much violence occurred thereafter.  Historians report  how extensive it was:

No one ever saw or heard of such slaughter of pagan people, for funeral pyres were formed from them like pyramids, and no one knows their number except God alone.

Historians believe that around 40,000 Jews and Muslims were killed in about two days.

Emile Signol (1804-1892) imagined how the scene of conquest may have appeared when he created this painting in 1847.  It is called "Conquest of Jerusalem."
