This unfinished work depicts David Rizzio, secretary to Mary, Queen of Scots. He was murdered in her presence, on 9 March 1566, while she was expecting her son (James).
"The Elizabeth Files" tells us more about the situation, including that Rizzio was "stabbed over 50 times."
The Queen believed that her husband, Lord Darnley, was involved in Rizzio's murder.
