A scene from the Bayeux Tapestry which depicts King Harold II with an arrow in his eye at the 1066 Battle of Hastings.  

His opponent, who believed he was promised (and, therefore, deserved the throne of England), was William of Normandy (who was later known as "William the Conqueror").  

This world-famous tapestry was created in France, circa 1070.
