When Margaret and Denis Thatcher moved into the Prime Minister's residence at Number 10 Downing Street, Denis was retired from his own career.  He was able to support his wife in any way the pair - and proper protocol - deemed suitable.

During "the Downing Street years," Denis had a famous motto:

Always present; never there.

Margaret and Denis both commented on the strength of their relationship, through the years.  When Denis died, in 2003, Margaret said of her husband:

Being PM is a lonely job.  In a sense, it ought to be - you cannot lead from a crowd. But with Denis there I was never alone.  What a man.  What a husband.  What a friend.
