Destroyed B-24s at Funafuti American History Disasters Geography World War II Tragedies and Triumphs

In addition to completely ruined B-24s - as a result of Japan's retaliatory strike following the bombing raid at Nauru - other planes had damaged tires, perforated tanks and punctured hydraulics. 

The scene, depicted in this photo, was typical at Funafuti following the attack.
