Dieppe - Operation Jubilee

On August 19, 1942, the Allies attempted to successfully attack the German-occupied French port of Dieppe.  Of the 6,086 men (mostly Canadians) who made it ashore - before they were forced to retreat - 3,623 were either killed, wounded or captured

Although the mission produced disastrous results, the men did not die in vain.  What the Allies learned at Dieppe helped them to mount a successful invasion on D-Day.
