Discovering Electricity - Early Experiments

Before they understood what caused electricity—and whether it is producible naturally and artificially—experimentalists demonstrated its power.

People took great risks when conducting such experiments because they did not always comprehend they could die as a result.  In a way, these electricians were like 18th-century test pilots, pushing the boundaries of mankind's knowledge.

In this clip, from a BBC documentary on the "History of Electricity," Professor Jim Al-Khalili introduces us to some of history's early electrical experiments and demonstrations.
