Dumbarton is situated on the north bank of the River Clyde and is dominated by the Dumbarton Rock. On the rock sits Dumbarton Castle (where William Wallace was first taken after Edward I’s men captured him in 1305).
Between 1222 and 1975, Dumbarton was a Royal Burgh.
This image, depicting a winter scene at the Firth of Clyde, gives us a view of Dumbarton Rock (and castle) in the middle of the picture.
