Elizabeth I - Armada Portrait Biographies Social Studies World History Famous People

George Gower (1540-1596) painted this portrait of Elizabeth I to commemorate Britain's victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588. 

Of note in the painting are these items:

  • The Spanish Armada, in the upper-left corner
  • The storm-tossed Armada, in the upper-right corner
  • The globe, resting under the Queen's hand (depicting power)
  • The "black pearls" which once belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots.
