Erich Maria Remarque (1898 - 1970) was a German conscripted soldier (at the age of 18) and a survivor of World War I.

He wrote a novel about his experiences, at the Western Front, which was published in 1929.  Its title in German - Im Westen nichts Neues - means "Nothing New in the West."

Remarque's book was published in English with the title:  All Quiet on the Western Front.  It remains a popular story about the horrors of war and will be remade into a new film (starring Daniel Radcliffe of "Harry Potter" fame) set for release in 2013.
