Fighting in the Trenches at Verdun - Cote (Hill) 304

Fighting in the Trenches at Verdun - Cote (Hill) 304 Tragedies and Triumphs Famous Historical Events Social Studies World War I

During World War I, one of the longest and most-vicious battles took place at Verdun, France. This image depicts a scene at Cote 304 (Hill 304).

It is difficult to distinguish the soldiers, in the trenches, from the general area in which they are located. Look for them in the upper-left quadrant of the photo.

To put the location of the photograph in perspective, have a look at this map which depicts not just Cote (Hill) 304 but the surrounding area as well.

The map, created by an unknown illustrator, is from The Times Encyclopaedia of the Great War/The Times History of the War.
