First Earthrise Seen from the Moon

Earthrise, seen for the first time by human eyes.

On Christmas Eve 1968 Bill Anders of Apollo 8 took this famous picture. The crew of Apollo 8 had prepared to photograph the Earth from the Moon, but they were so busy with other mission priorities that Earthrise took them by surprise.

NASA’s proclaimed the picture as evidence of the Earth’s insignificant position as just one planet in the solar system, but to those back on Earth its main force was as a picture of home. This was a real print, not a digital photograph, so it was not seen until after the mission was over.
