Frederick the Wise

Frederick the Wise History Social Studies Visual Arts

Frederick the Wise (1463-1525) is the commonly known name for the man who protected Martin Luther, thereby saving his life.  His official name was Frederick III of Saxony.

Lucas Cranach the Elder, Frederick's official court painter beginning in 1504, created this oil-on-panel depiction of Frederick the Wise in about 1532.
