This image of Fredericksburg, Virginia depicts the city as it appeared circa March, 1863. Note the civil-war damage to the bridge which crosses the Rappahannock River.

The photographer, Timothy O'Sullivan, took this view of the town from the east bank of the river.

Fredericksburg was a key place in the main eastern theater of the war where, in nearby fields, Union troops (led by General Burnside) and Confederate troops (led by General Hooker) fought vicious battles.
