French Indochina - Map Locator World History Geography Social Studies

This image depicts the area of Southeast Asia which was once known as "French Indochina."  Vietnam was part of French Indochina.

Ho Chi Minh, and other Vietnamese nationalists, fought for their independence from France.  That war began in 1946. After eight years of fighting, the French lost and were forced to leave.  "French Indochina" was no more.

Following the end of that war, the Geneva Agreements of 1954 divided Vietnam into North and South.

Many Vietnamese people did not agree with the partition of their country.  The stage was set for another conflict.
