Godfrey - Leader of the First Crusade

Godfrey of Bouillon a leader of the First Crusade

Godfrey of Bouillon (c. 1060-1100) led the First Crusade. In about 1420, Giacomo Jaquerio created this fresco depicting how the artist imagined Godfrey may have appeared when he was alive (including carrying a poleax).

The fresco is at Manta Castle, in the town of Saluzzo (situated in the province of Cuneo, in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy).

Jaquerio produced the work several centuries after Godfrey’s death. The artist used Manfred I of Saluzzo as his model for this fresco.
