Guadalcanal - War in the Pacific, Part 3

Four thousand more Japanese troops secretly arrive at Guadalcanal in late August, 1942.  In early September, as American Marines are on a patrol, they come upon a heavy-artillery weapon situated at point-blank range.  Risking his life, a crack-shot Marine takes out its Japanese operators.

On September 8th, both sides shout insults at each other as bullets continue to fly.  Marine Captain Sweeney has a purpose while screaming the Japanese equivalent of "Idiot!"  It allows him to keep the enemy shooters distracted as another group of Marines circle behind the opposing soldiers.  Browning automatic rifles end the lives of more Japanese men that day.

After their victory, however, Captain Sweeney and his men make a very sobering discovery.  They find a huge supply dump which can only mean one thing:  There are MANY more Japanese soldiers on Guadalcanal than the Allies first believed.

Thousands of Japanese soldiers are, in fact, planning to retake the airfield.  Their working plan is to set up a position about 1700 yards from the end of the airfield.  The battle is expected to begin at night.

Japanese soldiers make their way toward their destination by walking through a Guadalcanal jungle.  It is a very difficult trudge for them.
