Before Gutzon Borglum chose Mt. Rushmore as the site to carve four colossal presidential likenesses, he and his colleagues also considered Harney Peak.

The highest natural point in South Dakota, Harney Peak is situated in the Black Elk Wilderness area (in the Black Hills National Forest).  It rises to 7,242 feet (2,207 meters) and is the highest U.S. summit east of the Rockies.
