Henry Home American Revolution Ethics Famous People

Image of a portrait of Henry Home, a jurist and one of the leaders of the Scottish Enlightenment.  This painting was created by David Martin in 1794.  The original work is maintained by the National Galleries of Scotland.

When he wrote the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson had the words of Home (among others) in mind.  He admired the philosophy of this Scotsman (who is also known as Lord Kames).  His book of essays on morality is one of the few which Jefferson personally annotated.
